Surprisingly, many homeowners remain unaware of foam as a flooring option. The good news is foam floors are readily available in a plethora of colors, shapes, and sizes! You may recall from our previous piece that EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) foam is recommended for residential use. EVA floors are available in several different iterations including foam mats, rolled, and interlocking tiles. Sizes range from a square foot to over eleven square feet with one to two inches of thickness.
If you opt for the more popular option of tiles, be sure the tiles interlock on all sides with matching borders; avoid fixed corners. In this manner, you will enjoy complete flexibility when laying the tiles on your floor. We also advise you purchase all the tiles needed from one manufacturer to ensure perfectly interlocked tiles.
Another reason to purchase EVA foam flooring is the level of cushioning. Unlike rubber floors (commonly found in gyms), EVA foam is far more comfortable underfoot. Make sure you choose high-density EVA foam to guarantee the greatest level of cushion.
Of course, another reason to choose high-density foam is for reasons of quality and safety. High quality floors will carry certifications such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and various European certification standards. If your flooring does not specify one or more of these certifications, it is probably an inferior product and may contain lead or other toxic materials.
Another disadvantage to inferior foam flooring is its propensity to bleed through the material and potentially stain the floor underneath. Such a product may damage your floor and end up costing more in the end. Choose a high quality, high-density EVA foam floor from a reputable retailer to ensure your family’s comfort and safety.
Caring for your foam floor is a breeze as it is inherently stain-resistant. Simply wipe off the spills and sweep away the debris. Finally, an occasional damp mop with soap and water will keep those floors looking brand new!
