No matter your budget or preference in décor, there is a floor out there which will suit your needs. Manufacturers have jumped on consumer demand and there has never been a better selection available than there is today; and regardless of whether you seek genuine hardwoods or are more comfortable with laminates, the selection of colors, style, and pricing is unbeatable!
If you decide to install laminates or other types of engineered flooring, you can easily choose the ideal floor for your home with little concern for extraneous factors such as the ecosystem and other environmental factors. Genuine hardwoods, however, require a bit more thought. For instance, you will need to select the “grade” and “species” of hardwood. Grade is determined by the actual appearance of the wood, i.e. if it’s clear or variegated.
What about the species? Is it environmentally irresponsible to choose hardwoods from our vanishing rainforests or faltering ecosystems? Perhaps. That said, certain manufacturers are aggressively pursuing “green” alternatives which are both eco-friendly and can withstand the scrutiny of the most discerning consumer. Surprisingly, pricing seems to vary between $7.00 to $12.00 per foot installed contingent on the grade and species of hardwood.
One such product is called “Lyptus” which is derived from the hybrid form of the Eucalyptus species. According to the manufacturer, Weyerhaeuser® this environmentally friendly wood is harvested from the forests of Brazil. Utilizing special plantations specifically geared toward replenishment, this forward thinking company has considered propagation of the species and in so doing has determined that the hybrid trees grow to full size within a mere fourteen to sixteen years; far more quickly than other species. This discovery has led to more efficient harvesting with the opportunity to replenish the trees in a relatively short period of time.
Most observers within the flooring industry appear pleased with this product calling it “elegant” with “strength and density” and comparing it to Maple and Oak.
In summary, you truly CAN have it all! Beautiful, affordable wood flooring with an eco-friendly twist. It doesn’t get much better than that!
