What is Stainmaster, anyway?

DuPont’s Stainmaster and Scotchguard by 3M are two of the most popular types of carpet stain protection utilized today. However, there is quite a bit of difference between the two products. For instance, Scotchguard must be reapplied to carpet following a steam cleaning. Stainmaster, on the other hand, does not require reapplication. It remains on the carpet for its lifetime and provides superior protection against staining.

So, exactly how do stains occur and why? Simply put, “Dye Sites” are small areas within carpet fibers which absorb color. Unfortunately, certain dye sites remain after color is applied which can allow further staining to occur. This is how carpet becomes stained from spills or other sources.

However, DuPont’s Stainmaster can come to the rescue. Stainmaster is a clear coating which is applied after the color process has taken place. The process through which Stainmaster is applied can actually neutralize the fibers containing remaining dye sites prohibiting additional staining. Granted, the process isn’t perfect, however, Stainmaster is the best guarantee against permanent staining of the carpet.

When Stainmaster was first introduced in 1986, it changed the entire carpet industry. People were now able to buy carpet in various colors; not just carpeting which camouflaged stains. Suddenly, white carpet and other lighter colors came into play and people were able to experiment with different decors and interior designs.

Although Scotchguard does help to protect carpets from staining, it is a temporary fix, at best. Much like any other surface or topical application, it will wear away over time. Stainmaster, on the other hand, is long-lasting and essentially good for the life of the carpet. It is well worth the investment and time to seek out the Stainmaster brand when purchasing carpet.

Although Stainmaster provides excellent stain resistance and protection, it is not resistant to soil. We recommend you clean your carpets every twelve to eighteen months after the initial installation in order to protect and prolong the life of your carpet.

Take care of your carpet and you and your family will enjoy it for many years to come!
